Are We Too Social?

The internet gives us an abundance of social media sites to connect with other like-minded individuals. Often times these communities offer real value, but when is it too much? How can a person effectively connect if they are spread between so many social networks? Twitter, FaceBook, FriendFeed, and Pownce, Flickr, Blip.fm, TwitterMoms, Spark People, and Professional Associations with forums, the list goes on and on.

I get social first thing in the morning with a cup of coffee, jumping back and forth between my two favorites, FaceBook and Twitter. Social media is a small part of my job, so I continue the socializing throughout my work day, expanding my reach to some of the mom communities I belong to. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that when I come home from work, after spending all day in front of a computer, I sit down at my desk at home and check all of my sites again.

Where do I draw the line and how much is too much? I feel like my time on social sites is well spent, but I have this nagging question about creep. Is social media slowly preventing me from being as productive as I can be? How do you manage your time on social sites?

Why Write an eBook

I just finished reading Julie Roads’ ebook titled, “How to Become a Successful Copywriter.” I have to give Julie a pat on the back. Not only was the ebook well written and informative, she definitely understands the power of giving in order to receive. Julie offers a plethora of advice for people trying to embark on a copywriting career.

Search for “why write an ebook” or “ebooks as a marketing tool” and you’ll be bombarded by the advertisements – “Write and sell ebooks for multiple streams of income!” What? These offers are no better than the television infomercials motivating people to get on the get rich quick bandwagon. Skip the fantasy ads and take a hint from Julie. She gives her ebook away for free, just like many others. Julie even encourages people to share the ebook with others for FREE. Why? Here are a few of my favorites:

1. It helps build credibility and shows you are an expert in your field. Julie is an experienced copywriter and is extremely knowledgeable about the field. Simply read her ebook and you’ll agree.

2. It is a marketing tool for products or services. In Julie’s case, her copywriting business, Writing Roads. Now that I’ve read Julie’s ebook and have browsed her site, I am likely to contact her if and when I have a need for a copywriter. I’m also inclined to point my associates in her direction.

3. Offer the book for free, but offer more at a cost. Julie provides ample information in her ebook, but for the person who wants more indepth mentoring, Julie offers a one-on-one service for a fee. This is much different than the 1995 ‘come to my seminar and buy my get rich system.’ Julie’s ebook is not about why you should hire her. She gives the reader genuine information about becoming a copywriter and for some, that is all they’ll need.

Writing an ebook can be beneficial to you, your career, and your website or blog, but don’t make the decision too lightly. A well written ebook without valuable information is not enticing. Make sure you have a topic that people want to read about and then get to work.
